Michael Dawson believes Wilfried Gnonto was not happy when Javi Gracia substituted the winger as Leeds United faced Wolves. Yet Rasmus Kristensen scored right after coming on.
The Whites travelled to Molineux in the Premier League this Saturday and took a 2-0 lead early in the second half. Jack Harrison (6’) and Luke Ayling (49’) hit in the early exchanges of both periods. So, Leeds boss Gracia introduced Kristensen for Gnonto in the 61st minute.
It took the right-back just seconds to give Leeds a 3-0 lead over Wolves after solid play by Harrison. The winger fizzed a cross into the area but Jonny made a hash of his attempted clearance. He let Kristensen snatch the ball and crash it home into the bottom-left corner.
Dawson claims Gracia annoyed Gnonto with Leeds’ substitution
But while Kristensen had an instant impact, Dawson feels Gracia annoyed Gnonto with the substitution aimed at changing Leeds’ formation. The forward made way for the right-back as the Whites boss introduced another defensive body before Wolves started a comeback.
“It’s Kristensen, he’s just come on for Gnonto and you’re thinking Gnonto wasn’t happy,” Dawson told Sky Sports News (18/03, 16:21). “I’ll tell you why because they’ve changed formation, they’ve gone to a back five. And it’s wing-back to wing-back.
“[Junior] Firpo down the left-hand side puts a ball in and it’s Kristensen who gets it. Jonny should clear the ball, he doesn’t. He nicks it off him, he gets one-v-one with [Max] Kilman. Very tight angle, he just strikes it across the goal and it goes through Jose Sa’s legs.”
Gnonto could not capitalise on his chance to impress against Wolves
Gnonto would have hoped to impress Gracia at Wolves after starting for Leeds in the West Midlands. The 19-year-old has struggled to hold down a role since the Spaniard took over at Elland Road in February. He had only started in one of his previous three league outings.
Gracia started Gnonto in his debut fixture at the helm against Southampton but also only afforded him 61 minutes. Jesse Marsch’s £4m summer signing from FC Zurich then played for just 22 minutes against Chelsea and then a further 24 against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Gnonto showed Gracia the impact he can offer against the Seagulls by assisting Harrison’s equalising goal. It was the eight-cap Italy dynamo’s second assist in the Premier League. He has also offered two goals through, now, 16 appearances in the English top-flight to date.
