Josh Peck’s brief role in Oppenheimer has inspired a meme frenzy online, with many pointing out that the actor inadvertently recreated a moment from the beloved kids’ show, Drake & Josh.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer boasts one of the best casts in recent years with Oscar-winners and soon-to-be nominees spilling out of every scene. But there were several faces that moviegoers were certainly surprised to see, one of the most notable being Josh Peck.

Josh Peck’s role in Oppenheimer

In Oppenheimer, Josh Peck takes on the role of Kenneth Bainbridge, a physicist who worked on the Manhattan Project’s instrumentation team before being appointed as the head of the team in charge of testing the bomb for the first time.

Bainbridge only appears briefly in the film but his role is a crucial one as he served as the director of the Trinity nuclear test.

That’s right, Josh Peck’s character is the man responsible for pushing the button to detonate the very first atomic bomb.

Speaking about the Trinity test years later, Bainbridge said: “My personal nightmare was knowing that if the bomb didn’t go off or hangfired, I, as head of the test, would have to go to the tower first and seek to find out what had gone wrong.”

Recreation of a Drake & Josh meme

Oppenheimer has attracted plenty of eagle-eyed fans and it didn’t take long for many to notice that during film, the 36-year-old actor inadvertently recreates an iconic face he pulled in the kids’ TV series Drake & Josh, which inspired the infamous “Megan” meme.

The Twitter (or should that be X now?) user @thisisnotahmad pointed out the moment, with their tweet going on to be viewed more than 3.3 million times and earning over 114,000 likes.

Beyond recreating Drake & Josh’s iconic “Megan” moment, viewers have had plenty to say about Josh Peck’s appearance in the film.

One fan on Twitter was disappointed that Josh Peck didn’t have more to do: “Me watching Oppenheimer and witnessing the greatest acting performance of our generation (Josh Peck just said 3 words).”

This fan made a reference to another classic Drake & Josh scene: “Josh Peck in Oppenheimer like ‘we had to bomb Japan twice for emphasis…EMPHASIS.’”

“So I just finished Oppenheimer and Josh Peck really distracted me,” commented another viewer.

This fan also noted the iconic “Megan” meme: “I just found out Josh Peck is Oppenheimer, now I know who’s responsible for the atomic bomb.”

And finally, this fan commented: “Favorite part of Oppenheimer was the fact that Josh Peck detonated the first atomic bomb.”
