Despite not visiting a dentist in 58 years, Shane Macgowan's teeth helped him find true love

Shane MacGowan’s teeth were a conversation point for most of his life.

The Pogues singer Shane MacGowan sadly passed away today, November 30, from viral encephalitis.

For many fans, it was MacGowan’s teeth that made him such a remarkable character, aided of course by his impressive voice.

The singer’s teeth fell out one by one during his musical career and he went through a huge transformation in 2015, spending over nine hours in the dentist seat for his new dentures.

Shane Macgowan’s teeth gave way to his parting lifestyle

MacGowan’s pre-denture teeth were described as “stumps” which had fallen out throughout the years. The singer became a hard-to-forget face thanks to them as he so often sang wth them on display.

Over the years, fans noticed less and less teeth in the star’s mouth during performances and it’s not something he was shy about discussing.

According to reports, MacGowan’s teeth were a consequence of years of partying fouled with drugs and alcohol.  MacGowan confirmed to The Independent that part of the damage was even caused by biting down on The  Beach Boy vinyl while “out of [his] head.”

MacGowan’s teeth transformation

In 2015, things changed for ManGowan’s smile though, as he underwent extreme dentistry. His last tooth fell out in 2009 and he said he was initially left with a “botch” pair of dentures.

Six years later though, he managed to get an impressive smile back thanks to a team of dentists who described it as “the Everest of dentistry” to The Independent at the time. Macgowan’s transformation was filmed in a documentary titled Shane MacGowan: A Wreck Reborn, which followed the complete process.

Darragh Mulrooney led the dental team in the job and managed to fix MacGowan a set of 28 dentures on a titanium frame, making sure to include one sparkling gold tooth, as requested by The Pogues singer.

His wife said it was his teeth that she liked about him

Writing candidly about her own struggle with her teeth for The Irish Independent, wife Victoria May Clarke admitted that it was actually MacGowan’s teeth that attracted her to him in the first place. For Clarke, his teeth were a sign of rebelliousness and a lack of vanity.

“He is probably best known globally for having hideous teeth. A mouthful of rotting stumps and a gurning grin had become his trademark until this time last year, when he braved the dentists after having avoided it for 58 years,” she wrote.

“What you do or don’t do with your teeth can be a style statement, a political statement, it can convey information about your values, in the same way that the kind of car you drive says something about you. Mine is held together with gaffer tape,” she continued, adding that she didn’t equate flossing to something that “cool” people did.

“Having dodgy teeth and not caring about it was part of what attracted me to Shane (and also to David Bowie and Johnny Rotten). It was a sign of rebelliousness, of being a free spirit, a non-conformist. It was a sign of not being shallow, perhaps, of being willing to see beyond the superficial charm of a Hollywood smile. The Hollywood smile in America simply says that you had a good orthodontist, but in Europe it still carries a stigma of being ‘fake’ or vain.”

'I know': £13m forward suggests he could snub Newcastle or Nottingham Forest

Marvin Dusksch has indicated that he would be happy to stay at Werder Bremen despite reports linking him with Premier League duo Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest.

With the European Championships rapidly approaching, the January window is likely to be the cause of much internal strife amongst players like Marvin Ducksch.

Reportedly a mid-season target for both Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest – according to Sky Germany’s Christian Falk and BILD – would a move to the Premier League be a help or a hindrance to Ducksch’s hopes of securing a place in Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany squad?

Newcastle and Nottingham Forest interested

On one hand, greater exposure in Europe’s most high-profile domestic competition would do the late-blooming forward no harm. On the other, a sluggish start to life in Newcastle or Nottingham could see Ducksch overtaken by another of the attackers at Nagelsmann’s disposal.

Speaking to Sky as speculation over his future begins to increase, Ducksch is keen to point out that it is at Werder Bremen where he has forced his way into the Germany reckoning, fully aware of the benefits such a talismanic role at club level brings him.

“I was able to develop into a national player here (at Bremen). And I know what I have at the club,” Ducksch explains. “(Although) of course, in football, you never know what could happen.”

Marvin Ducksch catches Nagelsmann’s eye

The two-time German international, once of Borussia Dortmund, has taken over the mantle at the Weser Stadium following the departure of the reigning Bundesliga Golden Boot winner Niklas Fullkrug. Ducksch, who can play anywhere across the frontline, has six goals and four assists in 2023/24 already, with his stunning free-kick against Wolfsburg one of the highlights of the entire Bundesliga campaign.

Werder’s sporting director Clemens Fritz, meanwhile, has wasted no time in informing Ducksch’s suitors that the in-form forward is not for sale

“A winter transfer is not an option for us,” Fritz explained to Bild last week.

7 video game adaptations Amazon’s Fallout must learn from to avoid being a nuclear disaster

In an increasingly competitive streaming landscape, Amazon’s Prime Video has brought in the big guns in recent years with TV adaptations including The Boys, The Wheel of Time, Jack Reacher and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The next big new arrival from the streaming service is Fallout, a TV series based on one of the most beloved video game franchises out there.

First look at Prime Video’s Fallout series

On November 28, 2023, the first images from the upcoming Fallout series were released, showing off several of its key characters and elements such as the iconic Power Armor and the Brotherhood of Steel’s aircraft.

The series has been developed by Westworld co-creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan – the brother of Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan – and will star Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins and Kyle MacLachlan as members of its main cast.

Fallout will tell an original story set within the world of the video game franchise. Set 200 years after a nuclear apocalypse has devasted humanity, the series follows the gentle inhabitants of luxury fallout shelters who emerge from their underground havens into a deadly and irradiated hellscape where a complex, violent and strangely retro society has risen from the ashes.

The Fallout series will premiere on Prime Video on Friday, April 12, 2024.

7 video game adaptations Amazon’s Fallout needs to learn from

There has been a long and storied history of film and TV adaptations of video games and to say that the results have been mixed would be an understatement.

However, the various adaptations that have arrived over the years have all provided numerous lessons that the Fallout series needs to learn from in order to succeed.

The Last of Us

Released back in January, the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us was lauded as one of the best TV series of 2023 in only the first month of the year. The series lends much of its success to how faithfully it adapted its source material, closely following the narrative of the original video game.

For newcomers, the series was a revelation and for video game fans, it was fascinating to see how each key scene would translate into live-action courtesy of the spellbinding pair of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.

Where The Last of Us arguably triumphed the most, however, was where showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann deviated from what came before, notably the Bill-focused episode 3.

To that end, the Fallout series must allow itself the ability to tell its own story without getting too fixated on paying homage to what came before. Thankfully, in that regard, the Prime Video adaptation is telling its own story rather than directly remaking an existing game.

The Super Mario Bro Movie (2023)

The 2023 Super Mario Bros Movie became one of the highest-grossing films of the year for a reason.

While the casting of Chris Pratt as Mario continues to raise eyebrows, the movie’s joyous animation style cannot be questioned as it instantly captured the hearts of millions and directly harkened back to the video games so many fans adore.

As a result, it’s vital that Amazon gets the look of the Fallout series just right and the first images, particularly those of the instantly recognizable Power Armor and vault suits, show that the early signs are promising.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)

On a similar note, 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog movie may have won plenty of praise and kickstarted a franchise upon its release but there was initial hesitation surrounding the film thanks to the original design for Sonic himself.

Following an outspoken fan campaign, Paramount delayed the movie so that the design of the titular hedgehog could be altered and made to look more akin to his video game counterpart.

This goes to show that no one loves a video game franchise more than its fans. As such, if any questions pop up surrounding the direction of the Fallout series, it could prove beneficial to listen to their views.

Arcane: League of Legends

The Netflix series Arcane: League of Legends appeared seemingly out of nowhere in 2021 to become one of the best video game-inspired series ever as it delivered stunning and unique animation, a compelling story and boasted an incredible voice cast.

Among Arcane’s cast is Ella Purnell who just so happens to be playing a main character in the Fallout series too, so it’s already off to a good start.

On top of that, the Arcane series was a true passion project six years in the making. Fallout’s four-year journey to our screens hasn’t been quite as arduous, but hopefully, the creators have given the series enough time to gestate in order to deliver something truly explosive.

Tomb Raider (2018)

The 2018 adaptation of Tomb Raider may not have set the world alight upon its release, but it did earn the highest-ever rating for a video game movie on Rotten Tomatoes at the time – albeit a meager 53%, which has since been surpassed by several projects.

One of the biggest criticisms surrounding the action-adventure movie was that aside from an impressive performance from Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander, many of the film’s supporting cast melted into the background and were easily forgettable.

Fallout, on the other hand, is known for the wide array of weird, wonderful, and above all, memorable characters players meet on their journey. It’s therefore imperative that the series allows its supporting cast the chance to shine and leave their mark on viewers.

Halo

The Paramount+ Halo series immediately drew criticism from fans for the way it made widespread changes from the source material, most notably by having the Master Chief – one of the most iconic and beloved video game characters in history – remove his helmet throughout the show and get a bit too up close and personal with the series’ villain, Makee.

While we may have praised The Last of Us for deviating from its source material, it did so while remaining faithful to how the characters were originally portrayed and expanded on certain elements of their story.

Halo, on the other hand, completely abandons the way in which its main character appeared in the video games which is something that Fallout must avoid. Although, something that stands the series in good stead is that it’s expected to tell its own story with new characters, rather than stepping on the toes of previously-seen characters.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Despite its infamous launch, Cyberpunk 2077 has earned plenty of praise in the years since for creating one of the most jaw-dropping and atmospheric worlds in gaming.

Part of that success has to be attributed to the superb music that helped to transport players into a futuristic dystopia, whether that’s the original score or songs that can be heard on car radios.

This is something that the Netflix anime, Edgerunners, arguably improves upon as it boasts a killer soundtrack.

In the case of Fallout, music remains just as important thanks to its retro 1950s aesthetic which the Prime Video adaptation must stay faithful to in order to win over existing fans.

She explained: “The main crop is Valencia Oranges (they aren’t as pretty as California oranges but taste waaaay better) and most of the yield is turned into orange juice.   Why am I investing in arable land?   Mainly for the stability, and the steady increase in value expected over the long run.”

With this investment, she is certain that she will overtake Bill Gates one day.

What is Amouranth’s net worth?

As per reports, Amouranth has an estimated net worth of $25 million. She started her career on Twitch and soon gained millions of followers across the platform.

Her Twitch streaming presence helped her gain popularity on other platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and more. However, she decided to end her deal with Twitch and sign a new one with Kick.

Amid this, Amouranth also started her OnlyFans page and has become a popular model on the platform.

How much is Bill Gates worth?

In 2023, Gates has an estimated net worth of $104 billion and is currently named the sixth richest person in the world by Forbes. A large portion of his net worth comes from the time he was the co-founder and former chairman and CEO of Microsoft.

Now, he spends his time doing philanthropic work and even had a Netflix documentary made about him a couple of years ago.

Confirmed: Mikel Arteta makes David Raya decision as Arsenal lineup emerges

Arsenal are back in Champions League action tonight as Mikel Arteta’s side host French side Lens at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners lost 2-1 away at Lens earlier in the competition and will be looking to avoid a similar result tonight.

Mikel Arteta unsurprisingly goes with David Raya in goal tonight.

Aaron Ramsdale replaced Raya in goal against Brentford at the weekend with the Spaniard ineligible to face his parent club.

Raya comes back in tonight but it’s a familiar centre back pairing ahead of him with William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes starting.

Takehiro Tomiyasu starts at right back with Oleksandr Zinchenko on the left side.

Declan Rice starts in holding midfield tonight with Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz ahead of him.

Gabriel Jesus leads the line in attack with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli starting out wide.

Leandro Trossard is only on the bench, joining the likes of Ben White, Eddie Nketiah and Jorginho.

Ramsdale, Karl Hein, Jakub Kiwior, Cedric Soares, Reiss Nelson, Mohamed Elneny, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri are also on the bench for Arsenal tonight.

Arsenal starting XI: Raya; Tomiyasu, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Rice, Odegaard. Havertz; Saka, Jesus, Martinelli.

Arsenal substitutes: Ramsdale, Hein, White, Nketiah, Kiwior, Cedric, Trossard, Jorginho, Nelson, Elneny, Lewis-Skelly, Nwaneri.

Report: Liverpool now targeting playmaker who admitted he would like to join Manchester City

Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Genk midfielder Bilal El Khannous ahead of the January transfer window.

Bilal El Khannous fancies signing for Manchester City but is now wanted by their Premier League rivals Liverpool.

That is according to a report from Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, who profile El Khannous ahead of him playing for Genk against Fiorentina on Thursday.

Some top talents have emerged from Belgian football and it’s not just Belgium international stars like Thibaut Courtois, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku.

Others such as Victor Osimhen, Jonathan David and Victor Boniface have become stars too and El Khannous could be next.

Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur want Bilal El Khannous

Corriere dello Sport now claim that El Khannous is already on the radars of two major Premier League clubs in Liverpool and Tottenham.

El Khannous was previously in the Anderlecht ranks before heading to rivals Genk in 2019.

The 19-year-old playmaker has impressed this season, bagging three goals and one assist in 15 league outings for Genk.

An attack-minded midfielder, El Khannous has already picked up three caps for Morocco and featured at the World Cup in Qatar last year.

The teenager appears to be going from strength to strength in Belgium and a big move wouldn’t be a surprise at all.

Liverpool and Tottenham may well scout El Khannous in action against Fiorentina on Thursday as facing a strong Serie A side will be a great test for him.

The two clubs may be considering January moves but El Khannous has already indicated that he faces a move to Manchester City.

El Khannous was quoted by Voetbalkrant earlier this month and suggested that City play football the way he likes to see it played.

El Khannous added that he ‘might like’ playing for City as they are like a Spanish team playing in the Premier League.

It’s unclear if City are actually keen but El Khannous may soon need to decide whether Liverpool or Tottenham fit his ideas.

YouTuber's daring photo in nothing but a 'catboys' sweater has fans purring

Popular YouTuber Dan Howell has set social media alight with his latest Twitter picture which has left fans shocked.

Dan Howell found internet fame in the early 2010s as part of a popular YouTuber duo with Phil Lester. In 2019, Howell came out as gay, but his relationship with Lesster remains ambiguous

His latest Twitter post has set fans talking after posing in a rather surprising outfit.

Dan Howell’s latest X post has sparked attention

Posting to X yesterday, November 27, Dan Howell promoted his merchandise online with a unique method.

Howell posed with a grey jumper from The Dan and Phil Shop, printed with an illustration of Dan and Phil. In this particular jumper, however, Dan and Phil were illustrated as ‘catboys’ with the text ‘Legalise Catboys’.

With the jumper, Howell paired…not much. The YouTuber seemingly wore no pants with the jumper, along with a cat choker.

The jumper is sold through the YouTuber duo’s merch store and costs $33. The artwork is by digital artist Usagi.

In less than one day, Dan Howell’s X post has gained over 5 million impressions and 8,000 quote retweets.

The meaning of catboys

Catboys and catgirls are popular in Japanese fiction and fandoms and feature humans with cat features or accessories, like ears and tails. Often, the catboy will se seen wearing a maid outfit with knee-high stockings. In online fandoms, celebrities and characters are often depicted as catboyws in fanart, editing their favorite celebrity with ears and tails along with the infamous maid outfit.

Although catboys aren’t always innately sexual they often can be sexualized and portrayed in a kink-like fashion. “Often depicted wearing a maid outfit and knee-high stockings, the catboy is sexualized and submissive, gender non-conforming and comforting” reports Dazed Magazine.

“The presence of catboys in the online canon is nothing new. With roots in anime culture, they’ve been a fixture on 4chan and messaging boards since the early days of the internet.

Reactions to Dan Howell’s X photo

Fans of the YouTuber were shocked to see Dan Howell’s latest Twitter post and the merch, after being surprised by what they saw. Many took to their own accounts to share memes in response.

“Daniel, my mother follows you????” joked one user.

“If you told me Dan Howell was going to be posting about catboys back in 2015, I would not have believed you,” added another.

One user joked that they’d accidentally opened the photo on their screen in public. “Oh my god, not me accidentally opening Dan Howell catboy picture at work,” they wrote.

3/10 performance; £10.5m ace Postecoglou wanted at Celtic now flopping in England

When Sheffield United paid around £10 million to bring in Vinicius Souza over the summer, they did so in the hope that the rangy Brazilian could be the glue which held Paul Heckingbottom’s Premier League newcomers together.

But as the hapless Yorkshiremen fell apart again on Saturday – relegation rivals Bournemouth cruising to a 3-1 win at Bramall Lane – it was the one-time Celtic target who found himself facing an avalanche of criticism from a band of increasingly disillusioned Sheffield United supporters.

And with good reason.

If Vini Souza’s job is to protect Heckingbottom’s defence, then it’s fair to say he is hardly doing what is expected of him at present. With 34, Sheffield United have conceded the most goals in the division. And the mere fact that Souza has started all but one of their games so far is a rather damning indictment of his impact. Or, more appropriately, a lack thereof.

Sheffield United v Everton FC - Premier League
Photo by Robbie Jay Barratt – AMA/Getty Images

Sheffield United lose again

Souza was labelled ‘incredible’ during his time in Belgium, winning the most tackles in the league to attract the attention of Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic. Since finally making a move to Britain 12 months on, however, he has looked less ‘incredible’ and more ‘inneffective’.

“Signed as United’s supposed midfield enforcer but they were so easy to play through at times,” the Sheffield Star wrote after that Bournemouth hammering, Souza given a 3/10 for a performance brought to an end at half-time.

“Bournemouth (were) creating chances for fun and causing issues with their movement and incisive passing through the middle of the park.

“Made way at the break and can have few complaints. Souza struggled to cope.”

Celtic wanted him a year ago

Relegated on loan at Espanyol in 2022/23, it would be a major surprise if Souza avoided a second demotion in succession, Sheffield United’s 8-0 obliteration at the hands of Newcastle summing up both their and his season so far.

Of course, things could have been a lot different for Souza north of the border. Celtic are used to dominating games domestically, in stark contrast to a Blades side back in the top-flight after a couple of seasons in the Championship.

But, still, excuses and hopes are already wearing thin for Souza and Sheffield United.

’They never’: Tim Sherwood makes claim about Tottenham and Aston Villa’s benches

Tim Sherwood thinks one of the big differences between Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa on Sunday was the quality of their benches.

Both Tottenham and Aston Villa have had their injury issues this season – Ange Postecoglou is facing his problems now.

From the very first game of the season, Villa have been without four first-team stars in Tyrone Mings, Jacob Ramsey, Alex Moreno and Emi Buendia – two have since returned to the squad, with the rising English star coming off the bench yesterday.

But whilst Villa had a loaded bench, including Youri Tielemans, who assisted Ollie Watkins for the winner, and super sub Leon Bailey.

It was a different story for Spurs and Tim Sherwood added that the London club ‘never had the changes to make’, as he told Premier League Productions (26/11/23 at 7:20 pm).

The likes of Pierre Emile Hojbjerg, who was criticised for his part in Villa’s goal, Oliver Skipp and 20-year-old Alejo Véliz were used by Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham and Villa’s squad depth

“The game was one with the strongest squad,” said Sherwood. “They (Villa) were allowed to make changes off the bench.

“Tottenham never had. They never had the changes to make. They have had so many injuries and so many suspensions, it has been crippling them. They have got Man City up next and they need to stop the rot, at the moment.”

Villa punish Tottenham

Spurs should have been out of sight in the first half, but they left the door open and Villa well and truly punished them.

From the quality Emery could use from the bench and the tactical changes he made, they ate Spurs up in the second half.

In the end, it was a deserved three points for the Midlands side, with the club’s official Twitter account mocking Tottenham after the match.

'Sad and worrying': £20m ace urged to leave Arsenal in January transfer window

Jakub Kiwior needs to leave Premier League leaders Arsenal on loan in the January transfer window with a return to Serie A the best option available to the AC Milan target.

That is the view of Piotr Czachowski, the former Poland international concerned about the situation Jakub Kiwior finds himself in ahead of March’s European Championship play-offs.

Kiwior is one of the first names on the team sheet at international level but you certainly cannot say the same when it comes to Arsenal. The £20 million signing from Spezia has started only two Premier League games so far this term, with Czachowski worried that a lack of game time under Mikel Arteta will impact Poland’s hopes of securing their place at Euro 2024.

Arsenal FC v Burnley FC - Premier League

Jakub Kiwior struggling at Arsenal

“He is considered the leader of our defence for the national team. No wonder, because he has great potential,” the one-time Dundee United ace tells TVP Sport.

“His club situation is not the best. At Spezia, he was an outstanding player. And, for him to be like that again, he has to return to the pitch for good. A loan is necessary because the competition at Arsenal is very difficult. The minutes played do not indicate that he will make constant progress.”

Kiwior has been linked with a number of clubs based in Italy’s top flight, including AC Milan and Jose Mourinho’s Roma. Czachowski believes that a return to Serie A, even if only on a temporary basis, would do wonders for a man who caught the eye at the Qatar World Cup on the back of his fine performances for Spezia.

A return to Italy?

“There is talk of Milan, Roma and Fiorentina. The Pole knows the specifics of the game in Italy and could basically jump into the squad straight away. I am convinced that Italy is a better solution (than joining another Premier League team),” Czachowski adds.

“If he has so few minutes played at this stage of the season, he should necessarily go on loan. The Arsenal defender seems subdued. His head is lowered, the eyes move to the side. This is sad and worrying ahead of the March play-offs.

“To be confident, he simply needs to play more.”

Poland will face Estonia in the play-off semi-final. Win that, and they’ll go head to head with Wales or Finland for a place at the Euros.

Arsenal, meanwhile, overtook Manchester City at the top of the Premier League on Saturday, Kai Havertz’ 89th minute winner sealing a 1-0 triumph away at Brentford.

Reports: Liverpool are favourites to sign £20m talent, but Newcastle United want him now

Liverpool are favourites to sign Sao Paulo defender Lucas Beraldo – but Newcastle United are now joining the race for his signature.

Newcastle United could now battle Liverpool in the race to sign Sao Paulo centre back Lucas Beraldo

That is according to The Mirror (26/11, p70), who claim that Newcastle are now a contender for Beraldo’s signature.

The Magpies have seen left-sided centre back Sven Botman go down with a knee injury and his return date is unclear.

Newcastle may now look to add another left-sided centre back and they could look to the Brazilian market…

Newcastle United want Lucas Beraldo

The Mirror now report that Newcastle are joining the race to sign Sao Paulo defender Lucas Beraldo.

It’s claimed that Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are all keen on Beraldo but Newcastle are now interested.

The report highlights that Beraldo could move for £20million and Newcastle are eyeing a double Brazilian raid.

Santos talent Marcos Leonardo is also wanted at Newcastle, with a £16million move in the pipeline for him.

Beraldo would offer depth in the left-sided centre back role at Newcastle but the favourites appear to be Premier League rivals Liverpool…

Liverpool leading race for Beraldo signature

UOL Esporte over in Brazil report that Liverpool are ‘the favourite club’ to take Beraldo away from Sao Paulo.

The Reds are looking for more defensive depth and would seemingly like to land a natural left-footer.

Current centre backs Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah are all right-footers.

Beraldo would bring some balance on that side of Jurgen Klopp’s back line and has considerable potential at just 20.

Liverpool clearly face a major Premier League battle for Geraldo though, with Newcastle now the latest club in the mix.

'Let the team down': Eidur Gudjohnsen blasts Chelsea 23-year-old after Newcastle defeat

Eidur Gudjohnsen and Steve McManaman were critical of Reece James after he was sent off during Chelsea’s 4-1 defeat at Newcastle United.

It never rains but pours for Chelsea, or so that seems with their performances, as they illustrated against an injury-hit Newcastle side on Saturday – Dean Saunders was critical of Mauricio Pochettino for his comments after the match.

Injury has caused Reece James many problems over the years, so he didn’t help himself by picking up two needless yellows yesterday and he is now set to be on the sidelines again.

Former striker Eidur Gudjohnsen thinks the Chelsea captain ‘let the team down’, whilst former Real Madrid star Steve McManman added that it was ‘really poor’ from the right-back, as he told Premier League Productions (25/11/23 at 5:10 pm).

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were already having a bad day, but you know it’s really bad when your most reliable player, Thiago Silva, gifts the opposition a goal.

But that was just one of many problems that Chelsea endured themselves, with Eidur Gudjohnsen and Steve McManaman critical of the man with the armband.

Reece James’ red card for Chelsea

“When you thought they would have an uphill battle 3-1 down, on a yellow card, your captain, he did let them down a little bit I thought,” said Gudjohnsen.

McManaman added: “When you are on a yellow card, you just don’t touch. They are 3-1 down when this happens. The game is almost gone. That effectively ended the game.

“It’s really poor. He has been injured and he has just come back. He is the skipper and he does that. When they have a bad day, they have a really bad day.”

Another backwards step for Chelsea

The performances against Manchester City and Arsenal, as well as the win at Tottenham, started to provide the Chelsea fans with hope.

The feeling was that the team was starting to make progress and showcase their worth under their new manager.

But this seems like a backwards step for the team, who for the second game running, have conceded four goals.

It’s all good doing it against the Treble winners and securing a point, but it looks far worse when it happens in defeat.

'All over the place': Steve McManaman slams Liverpool star for 'very strange' display at Man City

Steve McManaman thinks Alisson Becker had a ‘really strange’ game during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw at Manchester City on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp made his feelings clear before the game that he simply doesn’t like the idea of Liverpool playing at 12:30 pm.

Could that have been a reason for Alisson Becker’s performance at the Etihad? Steve McManaman says he was ‘all over the place’ for Liverpool and he highlighted how international duty might have played a part, as he told Premier League Productions (25/11/23 at 2:40 pm).

Usually, the Brazil star is known for his all-round game, including his long punts down the field for Mohamed Salah.

But this time around, the £150k-a-week star’s (Spotrac) miss-kick led to Manchester City opening the scoring through Erling Haaland – Trent Alexander-Arnold was also criticised.

That piece of action took place in the first half and McManaman thinks Alisson Becker continued his ‘crazy’ passing throughout the match.

Alisson Becker v Manchester City

“Alisson had a really strange game,” said McManaman “Very strange coming back from international duty.

“Sometimes, you focus on midfielders or forwards after international duty. But actually, it was the goalkeeper. He was all over the place.

“He tried to make crazy passes today as if he was this sweeper up, where he wants to play all these delicate balls. Once you are back in the game at 1-1, you get it and kick it 80 yards away from your own goal. He just got caught today.

“If he has done his hamstring then he is going to be out for a significant amount of time which isn’t great for Liverpool.”

Off day for Alisson

The 31-year-old is allowed such games because he has been one of Liverpool’s best players during the last few years.

There is no doubt that, in recent times, he has taken his game up a level and he is probably allowed such an off day because he will be back to his best pretty soon.

But, in the end, Trent Alexander-Arnold came up with the magic to send out another signal that Liverpool are in the Premier League title race.

The Reds are sitting third in the Premier League table, two points off leaders Arsenal, who beat Brentford 1-0 yesterday with a late Kai Havertz goal.

'Perfect': Gary Neville shares verdict on Arsenal beating Brentford

Pundit Gary Neville believes that Arsenal are ‘in a good place’ after beating Brentford 1-0 on Saturday evening.

Arsenal are ‘getting the job done’ despite not being at their fluent best in the final third.

That is the verdict of pundit Gary Neville, who watched Arsenal beat Brentford 1-0 on Saturday evening.

This looked like being a frustrating night for Arsenal, who were struggling to break down the Bees.

Kai Havertz had other ideas though, popping up at the back post to head home from Bukayo Saka’s cross.

Gary Neville reacts to Arsenal victory

Arsenal simply had to battle through this one and showed great winning mentality by coming up with that late goal.

The result takes Arsenal top of the Premier League table, taking advantage of Manchester City only drawing with Liverpool.

Pundit Neville has now taken to social media to suggest that Arsenal are ‘in a good place’ following that win in West London.

Neville feels that the hype around Arsenal ‘isn’t big’ right now, largely because performances aren’t quite as impressive as last season.

Neville added that the Gunners are ‘solid’ and ‘getting the job done’, which is ‘perfect’ for a team in Arsenal’s position.

The former Manchester United defender highlighted that this Arsenal team – emphasis on ‘team’ here rather than the club – have yet to win a league title so grinding out these wins is ideal for them as they look to go one better than last season.

‘Arsenal are in a good place. Not at their best so the hype isn’t big, but they’re solid and getting the job done. Perfect for a team looking to win a title that haven’t before,’ said Neville.

Even the most ardent Arsenal fans would probably accept that this season hasn’t been quite as eye-catching as last term.

Arsenal haven’t been as free-flowing going forward and chief playmaker Martin Odegaard has yet to really hit last season’s heights.

Mikel Arteta has really tightened Arsenal up though as they have conceded just 10 Premier League goals this season.

That is now the best defence in the Premier League and Arsenal’s control of games – as well as their ability to restrict high-quality chances – is giving them a different edge.

That change may well see Arsenal go even closer to a Premier League title this season, and if their attack can start hitting top gear without sacrificing some of that defensive stability, then Arteta may well succeed where he just fell short last season.

'Nonsense': Jamie Carragher hits back at Gary Neville theory about Arsenal

Pundit Gary Neville has suggested that Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale clearly feels ‘under pressure’ after an error against Brentford.

Gary Neville has offered his reaction after seeing an error from Aaron Ramsdale in Arsenal’s trip to Brentford.

Arsenal made the short trip to West London this Saturday evening, travelling to take on Brentford.

This is never an easy game and Brentford always love to take points off the so-called ‘big six’.

Aaron Ramsdale almost gives Brentford a helping hand

The last thing you want to do against the Bees is give them an easy goal – but that’s so nearly what happened.

Goalkeeper Ramsdale is in the Arsenal side tonight with David Raya ineligible to play against his parent club.

Ramsdale was given the chance to impress Mikel Arteta and stake a claim for a return to the Arsenal team.

However, Ramsdale almost gifted Brentford a first-half goal with some slack work on the ball.

Ramsdale lost control of the ball right in front of his own goal, with Yoane Wissa laying the ball back to Bryan Mbeumo.

Declan Rice was in the right place at the right time to block Mbeumo’s shot, with Arsenal just about escaping disaster.

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher react to Ramsdale error

Arsenal got away with it and snatched a win late on as Kai Havertz secured a 1-0 victory, but pundit Gary Neville wasn’t impressed with Ramsdale’s moment.

Neville took to social media to suggest that Ramsdale’s mistake came because he is under pressure at the Emirates Stadium.

Arteta took the decision in September to bench Ramsdale in favour of summer signing Raya.

Both Raya and Ramsdale have been a little shaky this season with Neville now believing their nervousness is down to feeling under pressure to perform.

We don’t often see goalkeepers chopped and changed and Neville seemingly thinks that the situation isn’t helping either of them.

We would argue that Arteta hasn’t really made this a competition though; he has made it pretty clear that Raya is now his first-choice stopper.

Ramsdale isn’t really under huge pressure because the likelihood is that he will be out of the team as soon as Raya is available for election again.

That’s a verdict Jamie Carragher agrees with, taking to social media to suggest that the idea Arteta has created pressure on Ramsdale is ‘nonsense’.

Carragher supports Arteta’s decision to seek improvement between the sticks and believes there is no battle at all.

Carragher highlighted that Arteta did similar in the past by replacing Bernd Leno with Ramsdale in 2021, completely disagreeing with Neville’s theory.

Report: Arsenal now more likely than Manchester United to sign 'electric' £60million player

Arsenal are now pushing to the front of the queue for the signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Pedro Neto.

Arsenal are thought to be ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers star Pedro Neto in 2024.

That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, who claim that Arsenal have edged ahead of United in the race for Neto.

The Gunners are certainly Premier League title challengers this season but they haven’t been quite as impressive going forward this season.

Mikel Arteta may look for another attacking player in January, but could go for a wide man rather than a centre forward.

Arsenal keen on Wolves star Pedro Neto

TEAMtalk now state that Arsenal and Manchester United both want Wolves star Neto, but Arsenal are more likely to make a move.

It’s stated that Arteta is keen to sign Neto because of concerns about Bukayo Saka.

Saka has picked up a number of knocks and niggles this season given that he plays pretty much every game for Arsenal.

Adding another left-footed winger as competition for Saka on the right side could be a great idea, with Neto now emerging as a top target.

The report adds that Wolves would need an offer of around £60million in order to sell Neto – meaning Arsenal will have to spend big.

Saudi Arabian clubs are interested too but Neto wants to stay in Europe, meaning Arsenal have a great chance of a deal.

Neto injuries have to be a concern

If we are talking about pure talent then yes, Neto deserves to be playing for a club like Arsenal.

Neto wouldn’t look out of place in Premier League title challenges and Champions League clashes.

The 23-year-old has already racked up seven assists this season, despite playing just 10 Premier League games.

Neto has been exceptional this season with Alan Pardew branding him ‘electric’ for such outstanding displays in a Wolves shirt.

The problem is that Neto just keeps getting injured.

The last few years have been difficult for Neto, suffering a number of injury problems – including a hamstring blow last month.

Arsenal may need to be wary of paying so much for a player who suffers regular injury problems, but few would begrudge him the move on his talent.
